Canalization/Drinking Water Supply and Sprinkling of Nursery for Reforestation Region of Porrier/ Jean-Rabel/ Haiti It is scientifically proven that a lack of access to clean drinking water in Haiti is the primary cause of the high infant mortality rate in the country. Access to clean drinking water is the most effective way to reduce the rate of Diarrhea and Typhoid fever. To this end we at the Grann Lison Foundition and with the help of the population of Porrier/Jean-Rabel Haiti set out to provide access to clean drinking water, by cachement of a local water spring in an area called La Montagne. The implementation of this project now serves 25,000 people in ten different distribution sites with clean drinking water. Each site has it’s own community based committee which is responsible for the maintenance of each individual distribution site. The water project has allowed Grann Lison Foundation to supply water for the Reforestation project in the area. Deforestation is a major cause of soil erosion and loss of ground water in the Porrier /Jean –Rabel area. In the 1970’s the area was covered with mango, avocado, coffee beans, and other native trees. Today the canopy of trees has been depleted because of over cutting of trees to be used as charcoal. The Grann Lison Foundation is working to replace the native tree species by strategically planting these trees we hope to replenish the groundwater. Since 2004 the Foundation has planted over 20,000 native trees. | |
