An intense earthquake has left the small island nation of Haiti in "total disaster and chaos," according to U.S. officials. Registering a magnitude of 7.0, struck late on Tuesday afternoon and has done damage that will not be measurable for some time. As you can imagine, there is a flux of people trying to leave Port au Prince. As a result, Jean Rabel starts to receive its share. People are arriving with injuries and no personal belongings, clothes and other items, nothing but their lives. I assume that is happening in other cities of the country. United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told NBC's "Today" program that 3 million people - about a third of Haiti's population - had been affected by the quake, and that "there will be tens of thousands of casualties - we don't have any exact numbers." The massive earthquake struck Haiti, reducing much of its capital to rubble. It was the worst earthquake in the region in more than 200 years, with as many as 50,000 feared dead. The devastation created serious obstacles to those attempting to deliver promised foreign aid.
